I have tried all sorts of diets in my life; most diets don't work. Good carbs, bad carbs, worst carbs; everything that common sense told me about eating was correct: small portions, modest fat amounts, high-quality food, avoid processed foods, and get plenty of exercise and sleep.
I just heard about the Dash Diet and I was initially skeptical. DASH stands for (don't quote me on this one) Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.
Now, not to be a debbie downer, but I like food. I like starches and sugars and meats. I like spices. I do not like eating veggies. And I'm certainly not going to put vegimite in my mouth.
What strikes me about the DASH Diet is that the minerals involved in the food take precendence. Mainly, Potassium. Potassium is an important element that plays a part in ion transfer in your cells. Any cell with water and Sodium needs Potassium to regulate the osmotic pressure. Too much pressure and you have hypertension, theoretically.
I like the Dash Diet because it's a simple diet with grains and whole foods. There's no punishment. It's just eat what is healthy and nutritiously balanced.
